Our History

How it started:
TLA – originally known as the Tonicha Lawrence Academy – first opened its doors in 2008 with just
eight children
gathered in a small village hall. Founded by
Tonicha Jeronimo (formerly Lawrence), a professional actress with an extensive career in television, musical theatre, and regional theatre across the UK, TLA was born out of a desire to move away from over-polished “stage school” training and return to
truthful, grounded performance.
How it developed:
From day one, Tonicha’s mission was clear: to train young performers with authenticity, discipline, and imagination—blending the best of old-school traditions with innovative, modern techniques. The goal was not just to perform, but to act with purpose, connection, and honesty.
Not-for-profit and scholarships
Over the years, the school has moved through five homes, each one shaping its character—until finally settling in its current space within a community-focused sports association. This venue reflects the very heart of TLA: warm, inclusive, professional, and full of life.
TLA is now a thriving not-for-profit organisation, having grown from a sole partnership into a powerful training hub that puts children and community first. With over £150,000 of self-funded scholarships awarded to date, the school remains fiercely committed to accessibility and opportunity.
Each Saturday, students are taught by a hand-picked team of exceptional industry practitioners across all disciplines of the performing arts. The bar is high—not for perfection, but for passion, work ethic, and growth. Whether training for a career on stage and screen or simply building confidence and creativity, every student is given the tools to thrive.
Agency and LAMDA:
TLA’s in-house agency has seen significant success, with students working in theatre, film, and television across the UK. From national tours to major TV productions, our young performers are being recognised not just for talent, but for their professionalism and emotional intelligence.
Our students have also excelled in competitions, consistently placing and winning in performance-based events that celebrate voice, acting, and creative storytelling.
Midway through its journey, Tonicha joined forces with Co-Principal Jennifer, whose introduction of LAMDA training brought another layer of excellence to the academy. Under Jennifer’s guidance, TLA students have achieved some of the highest LAMDA scores in the UK, including Gold Medal distinctions—a testament to the rigour and care of the programme.
Future
Looking to the future, TLA is proud to run a Teacher Training Programme, developing the next generation of drama educators both within the academy and for the wider arts community. This initiative ensures that TLA’s values—of honesty, discipline, and transformative learning—are passed forward with passion and skill.
Today, TLA is more than a performing arts school. It is a creative home. A movement. A place where young people are empowered to tell their stories with bravery and truth.
