CONTEMPORARY

What is Contemporary dance?

Contemporary Dance is an interpretive dance style that seamlessly blends various techniques from different genres,

with a special focus on the embodiment of emotion through movement and an emphasis on breath.

Drawing influence from genres including classical ballet, jazz and modern dance, performers enhance their creativity and personal exploration of the dance style, providing them with skills of improvisation, storytelling and the ability to communicate more abstract concepts such as social or personal experiences.

Under the guidance of Ava, our dedicated Contemporary Dance teacher, students are heavily encouraged to experiment with movement and discover a style that feels individual and unique to them. Alongside this, dancers will also focus on technique for the majority of class time in order to develop a wider range of movement in an effective and efficient way with control, fluidity and intention. At TLA we want to prioritise the safety of dancers, therefore a clear focus on technique also allows for dancers to minimise the risk of injury, ensuring sufficient body alignment and efficient use of the muscles.

TLA offers two different session:

To ensure all students build a strong foundation it is strongly advised/in some cases mandatory that students also attend ballet classes through TLA alongside Contemporary training.
