Maddie Irwin

Training and Education
Maddie was born and raised in the North West of England, where her journey in dance began at just two years old. Her early training included:

Character Dance
At 16, Maddie relocated to Birmingham to attend Elmhurst Ballet School, completing three years of rigorous vocational ballet training. During this time, she graduated with a Level 6 Diploma in Professional Dance and performed alongside the Birmingham Royal Ballet.
In 2022, she joined the Northern Ballet Postgraduate Programme in Leeds, gaining valuable stage experience in company productions such as The Nutcracker and The Great Gatsby, choreographed by David Nixon.
In 2024, Maddie continued her development at the Northern School of Contemporary Dance, where she earned a First-Class BA (Hons) in Contemporary Dance. During this year, she was awarded a Professional Placement Contract with Phoenix Dance Theatre as part of her MA in Contemporary Dance Performance.
She completed her Master's degree in Summer 2025, having performed lead and ensemble roles in Phoenix's National Tour of Inside Giovanni's Room by Marcus Jarrell Willis.
Professional Work
Maddie’s professional career has spanned both classical and contemporary work, across the UK and Europe.
Following graduation from Elmhurst, she joined Balletto di Siena in Italy under a professional contract. Upon returning to the UK, she collaborated with a number of companies and projects, including:

In Leeds, Maddie began an ongoing creative relationship with choreographer Sandrine Monin, contributing to research focused on increasing dance accessibility for the Blind and Visually Impaired community. This work evolved into the founding of Unbound Dance Theatre in 2024, with Maddie performing in their premiere production Fireflies at Dawn, which debuted at Bradford Alhambra before embarking on a regional tour. She continues to be involved with Unbound as a performer and supporting artist.
During her MA placement with Phoenix Dance Theatre, Maddie toured and ultimately performed as a Guest Company Dancer in Inside Giovanni’s Room, directed by Marcus Jarrell Willis, at Sadler’s Wells East.
Teaching and Community
Throughout her performance career, Maddie has remained deeply passionate about community engagement and dance education. Her teaching philosophy is rooted in curiosity, generosity, and a love for the craft. She is thrilled to be joining the TLA Team, embracing this new chapter with energy and purpose as both an educator and mentor.
